Changes relationships to participants= multimodal
ethnographers are asking much more of participants both in terms of the amount of participation (work)
Taking a picture of your blog is like taking a picture of a
self
Places new/different kinds of demands on the
ethnographer’s participation
documenting w video/sound recording is different than taking notes
Changes participants willingness to be in the ethnography
(see their own behaviors more visibly, need to deal with seeming themselves, increased risk of "exposure" to others, more demands for "contributions")
Even more problems with data mountain
Issues with anonymity are changed
Makes for reproducibility (representations can be distributed over the net in a keystroke)
Images/video of participants are different from written descriptions
Changes relationship to authenticity
New need to deconstruct illusion of seamless there-ness of multimodal representations (the illusions of immediacy, immersion and interactivity)
