7.1 Categories of data/representations for digital ethnographies of mediated communities

1. Representations of participants in material world environments
  • Photo images
  • Photo images with voice over
  • Video images with voice over
  • Video images with sound

2. Representations of  participation in mediated communities
  • Screen captures from phones/computers (+ voice overs describing participation + transcripts) Screencasts of participants posting, “writing” themselves into mediated spaces
  • Selected texts/images from participation

3. Representations of co-presence of participants in material-world + mediated spaces
  • Screenshots of community sites with analyses (preferably  with  links to expand/zoom in on sections? Or show where links on the actual site go? Or to link to discussions of images, text, design features etc.  Or maybe to images of user environments from which sites are accessed?)
  • Screenshots with a voice over
  • Screencasts side-by-side with videos of user interacting with screen in material environment
  • Videos of participants in material-world places where they access sites with their phone
  • Images/videos of participants with phones/computers within frame that includes material world context (as a series of widening frames = screen, participant & screen, participant in larger material space with screen)
4. Representations of interview material
  • Image series from videos with “transcript” captioned beneath the images (+ voice-over discussion of what took place)
  • Video interviews (with link to transcript that will come up as a rolling text at the bottom of the window); video may show participant talking, or it may include images of different environments/artifacts while participant talks about those environments/artifacts
Chats/ transcripts = either as screen captures or screen casts (sped up?)

5. Other representations of mediated text
  • Screencaptures/transcripts from discussion/comment sections of web sites
  • Image or print text (as a whole) with voice-overs discussing/anayzing  content
  • Videos with a moving focus across a page of text(or an image) while narrator discusses/analyzes text/image elements within that focus
